Long distance Hiking in Var
Grande Randonnée (GR)

Coastal Route: 187km.

This is the famous Chemin des Douaniers which follows the Mediterranean coastline and all along the way makes you want to jump right into that blue crystal clear water!
Don't forget sun cream, hats, water and bathing suits.!

If you are starting off in the west of the department, the trail leaves at Saint-Cyr and takes you to Bandol. Then from Sanary going through Six-Fours Les Plages follow the trail to Saint-Mandrier.

The trail begins again in Pradet and stops in Carqueiranne. Then it will take you around the Presqu'île de Giens and the Iles d'Or.

The second part of the trail leaves from the beautiful beaches of Bormes Les Mimosas and goes to Lavandou .

The hike takes off again in Rayol Canadel and ends up at the golf course in Saint-Tropez having been through Cavalaire, Ramatuelle, and Gassin.

If you haven't got a sunburn yet, then keep on for the last of the hike on the coastline: you still have from Sainte-Maxime to Saint-Raphaël at the very east ot the department! !!!


GR 51 : 290 Km

This hike takes you through the back country of Var, from east to west and a bit of coastline too.

Leaving from Saint-Raphaël, the trail goes along the Esterel massif in the east of the department, then goes through Le Muyand Rocquebrune, taking you through Grimaud, Cogolin, La Môle, the trail ends up at the Maures forest.

Then the trail follows the coast at La Môle, le Rayol-Canadel, Le Lavandou goes back up to Pierrefeu where you will see some of the loveliest countryside of Var. After admiring all of this you will follow the Gapeau valley, passing through Cuers, Belgentier et Solliès-Ville.

The hike continues with a little detour by Le Revest and Evenos before stopping in the heart of the Bandol... wine country.....a tempting place to rest! Those strong willed people who want to go on will be rewarded for their efforts by discovering the highest calanques in Europe!

This hike ends here at the border of the Var and Bouches du Rhônedepartments... Have you caught your breath? Do you want to go on? You can start again on the magnificent calanques walking trail between Cassis and Marseilles.


GR 99: 242km.

Leaving from Revest, situated just above Toulon, this hike will take you, via the western part of the departrnent, through many typical villages of Haut Var all the way to the famous Gorges (canyons) of Verdon.

From Le Revest you head to Signes and its magnificent forests, then Mazaugues, and after you will go through the charming little village of Bras, then Brue-Auriac, and Saint-Martin

Above Baudinard, you will appreciate the wide panorarna of the St. Croix lake and the Provence mountains.

Once you go through Aiguines, all your etforts will be rewarded at the signal du grand Margès where you will have a fabulous view of the Gorges du Verdon . Fantastic!


GR 90 : 60 Km

The Massif des Maures, in the southern part of Var is the setting for this jaunt.

From Gonfaron or Pignans, go to the belvedere of Notre Dame des Anges where you will be able to see the whole valley and even the sea.

On the way back down, the trail will take you through some remarkable chestnut woods, especially in Collobrières. Following along, you will see the menhirs on the pIateau des Lamberts and you wiII end up at the Chartreuse de Ia Verne.

You can reach Bormes les Mimosas and Le Lavandou by taking the Oratory trail.

NOTE: Due to the risk of forest fires in periods ot drought, the trail which leads to Notre Dame des Anges may be closed.


GR 49 : 110 Km

In this journey you will visit the northeast of Var. The starting point is at St. Raphaël, arrival at the Gorges de Verdon..

After Saint-Raphaël, you will discover Fréjus and the Esterel Massif with its red rocks, its canyons and its sharp peaks. The trail will take you through such charming perched villages as Tanneron, Tourrettes, Mons...and will lead you to the St Cassien lake.

Once in the untamed lands of Haut Var, you will go through Bargème, Trigance, and La Bastide, all of which have managed to keep their authentic Provençal ambiance.

Finally you will arrive at that fabulous spot of the Gorges du Verdon . And here, in the midst of this incredible landscape, you will be...just plain happy!
