Discover the hilltop village of Fayence in the Var

Village de Fayence

Perched on a hillside between the sea and the mountains, surrounded by picturesque Provencal landscapes, Fayence is one of the perched villages in the hinterland that's well worth a visit.

The village's name, Fayence, has nothing to do with “faïence” (“earthenware” in French). It comes from the Latin "Fagus", meaning "beech", a tree that was certainly numerous when the village was founded.

Fayence dans le Var

Its southern climate, the charm of its old streets and its welcoming inns with Provencal flavours will seduce visitors to this village where the past has left a few vestiges. You'll quickly fall under the spell of the village of Fayence, with its old stones, ancient houses, shady squares and small flower-filled squares.

Fontaine

As you stroll through the village's cobbled and stepped streets, you'll come across ancient fountains and beautifully restored gateways. You'll pass under vaulted porches and arches, walk along the ramparts and the Sarrazine Gate at the bottom of the village with its machicolations.

There are a number of small, friendly restaurants where you can discover the art of Provençal living over a glass of rosé and good produce bursting with sunshine and olive oil. Fayence is also renowned for its gliding centre (1st in Europe), where courses and competitions are organised (International Gliding Open).

Place à Fayence

Depending on the season, you can choose between downhill skiing or sandy beaches. Fayence is a 90-minute drive from the ski resorts and 45 minutes from the sea.
