Map and points of interest in Saint-Véran
Perched at an altitude of 2,042 meters in the heart of the Queyras Regional Nature Park, Saint-Véran is the highest inhabited commune in Europe and one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France. On this page, you will find our interactive map with all the points of interest, parking lots, and main sites. Check out the locations on our map before you arrive: this will save you a lot of surprises, especially in summer when traffic is very restricted.
How long does it take to visit Saint-Véran?
Allow at least half a day to see the main sights on foot. A full day is more comfortable if you want to climb up to the Clausis chapel or go hiking.
The main sites in the village—the Soum museum, church, sundials, wooden fountains, bread ovens—can be visited at a leisurely pace in a few hours. Allow time to stop and rest: the village stretches out over the slopes and the elevation gain adds up.
If you climb up to the astronomical observatory, add at least 3 hours of walking time for the round trip. In winter, the ski area linked to Molines-en-Queyras is worth a stay of several days.
Where can I download a map of Saint-Véran in PDF format?
Directly on this page, by clicking on the “Download map” button located just above our interactive map. The PDF can be viewed without an internet connection—useful when the mobile network is unreliable in the mountains.
The village is organized into seven distinct neighborhoods, each with its own fountain, bread oven, and mission cross. A good map will help you find your way around, as the terraced layout on the hillside is not immediately intuitive for first-time visitors.
Where is the tourist office?
The Guillestrois and Queyras tourist office — Saint-Véran office — is located at 8 rue de la Poste. It can be reached on +33 (0)4 92 45 82 21.
It is open Monday to Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. It is closed on Thursdays. During the high season, it is best to go early in the morning before the influx of visitors.
Where to park in Saint-Véran?
In summer, the answer is simple: you won't be able to park your car in the village. Access is prohibited to visitors, and parking is only available in the car parks on the outskirts. Since June 2025, payment has been made via parking meters.
All locations are indicated on our interactive map on this page. In July and August, make sure you arrive early to find a space.
What are the must-see places?
The village is full of things to discover. Here are the sites that are worth a visit:
The Soum Museum: located in the oldest house in the village (1641), in the Les Forannes district. Agricultural tools, larch furniture, mountain life of yesteryear.
The 17th-century church: columned porch, carved lions, gilded wooden altarpiece.
The sundials: one of them, painted by the dial maker Zarbula in 1840, is listed as a historic monument.
The wooden fountains: one per district, they punctuate your stroll through the village.
The Clausis Chapel: a 45-minute walk from the village, in an alpine setting.
The exhibition on the old copper mine: a walk from the village, free admission.
The Pic de Château-Renard Observatory: at 2,930 meters, it is the highest observatory in France, with activities and tours of the dome.
How to get to Saint-Véran?
By car from Guillestre, take the Route des Gorges du Guil, open all year round (winter equipment required in winter). From Briançon, the Col de l'Izoard is a beautiful alternative, closed out of season.
The nearest train station is Mont-Dauphin — Guillestre, served by the Paris-Briançon night train from Austerlitz. A shuttle bus then connects the station to Queyras: choose Saint-Véran Beauregard as your destination (timetables on Zou-MaRégionSud).
What are the best hotels in Saint-Véran?
The choice is limited but of good quality. The Hôtel & Spa L'Alta Peyra (4 stars) is the most upmarket: indoor and outdoor swimming pools, spa, several restaurants, direct access to the slopes. Les Chalets du Villard (3 stars) offers apartments with terraces, jacuzzis, saunas, and tennis courts. For a more intimate atmosphere, the Auberge l'Estoilies welcomes guests to a former farmhouse in the hamlet of Le Raux, a stone's throw from the GR58 hiking trail, with popular evening meals. The Baïta du Loup completes the picture with charming accommodation and free private parking—a real asset in this village.
