Mexican villas

Mexican villas are an outstanding feature of local architecture. These prestigious homes were built between 1880 and 1930 by residents who had made their fortunes in Mexico. Notable examples include Château des Magnans, Villa Morelia, Villa Sapinière and Villa Laugier.

Most of these luxurious residences, inspired by Italian, Tyrolean and Baroque architecture, are listed historic monuments. They are mainly concentrated on the Avenue de la Libération. Only the Villa La Sapinière can be visited, as the others are privately owned.

The historic center

The heart of the historic center is Place Manuel, surrounded by colorful facades. This lively square is dominated by the 15th-century Cardinalis Tower. Named after Jacques-Antoine Manuel, a Restoration deputy, it features a fountain with a bronze medallion.

The pedestrian streets, dotted with stores, invite you to stroll. The warmly-colored historic center bears witness to the past of this Alpine town. The Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens church is also worth a visit for its remarkable architecture.

The Valley Museum

The Musée de la Vallée tells the story of the daring Barcelona emigrants who settled in a Mexican villa. The villa's Doric-columned porch, wood panelling and inlaid parquet floors are all still intact.

The museum tells the story of the Ubaye's inhabitants' migrations, both near and far. It exhibits objects brought back from Mexico and retraces this extraordinary epic that has shaped the valley's identity.
