An overview of the history of Frigolet Abbey

The history of Frigolet Abbey began in the 12th century with the establishment of the first religious community. Pope Adrian IV confirmed this settlement in 1155. However, the abbey went through a period of decline in the 14th century, leading to the departure of the canons. In the 17th century, the abbey was taken over by Augustinians and Hieronymites, who brought the priory back to life. Despite the French Revolution and a number of historical setbacks, the Prémontrés succeeded in regaining possession of the abbey in the 20th century.

The abbey's unique location in the Montagnette region

Saint-Michel de Frigolet Abbey enjoys a unique location, hidden away in the Montagnette, a small chain of hills in Provence. Isolated in a wild valley, it is surrounded by a forest of pine, olive and cypress trees, offering a haven of peace and serenity. Its proximity to the towns of Tarascon and Avignon makes it easy to get to this place rich in history and spirituality.

The abbey is also close to the east bank of the Rhône, offering an uninterrupted view of the river. This strategic position undoubtedly played a role in the choice of location by the first monks present.

The name of the abbey, Frigolet, comes from the Provençal word "ferigoulo", meaning thyme, a plant abundant in the region. This perfectly reflects the bucolic, fragrant atmosphere that surrounds this place of worship.

The community of Saint-Michel and its role

The community of Saint-Michel plays a central role in the life of the abbey. Made up of Premonstratensian Canons Regular, also known as White Canons because of the colour of their religious vestments, this community is responsible for the various spiritual and material activities of the abbey.

They perpetuate worship, welcome pilgrims and visitors, and manage the monastic guesthouses.

The community is also involved in the production of the famous “Liqueur de Frigolet”.

In addition to these tasks, the canons of Saint-Michel de Frigolet are the guardians of the site's rich history, inherited from the 12th century, and ensure the preservation of its architectural and natural heritage.
