Located in the Fos sur Mer basin, the city and the port of Port Saint Louis developed at the mouth of the Grand Rhône. As the crow flies, Port St Louis is approximately halfway between Marseille and Saintes Maries de la Mer.
Its activity is mainly geared towards the sea and the industries linked to the port complex of the Fos sur Mer basin. Port St Louis offers six equipped ports, i.e. a thousand locations, 1 fishing port, 2 dry ports with all the corresponding construction and repair services.
By visiting Port St Louis, you will not be able to forget that the city is really at the gates of the Camargue. The architecture and style of the houses is that of the Camargue. Located at the southern end of the department and surrounded by swamps, it is also called a city from the end of the world.
Often neglected tourist routes, Port St Louis offers beautiful walks and many leisure activities around the port.
Port St Louis is also the kingdom of fishing and shellfish farming (thanks to its richness in plankton, the Rhône delta is very rich in fish and shellfish), its 10 km long Napoleon beach, the Roustan and the de la Gracieuse are frequented in summer and winter by snowboard enthusiasts, sand yachts, kites, speed sail and funboard (championships, competitions and world speed record take place there each year).
By taking an interest in the city's heritage, you will discover its main historic monument: the Saint Louis Tower (18th century) which served as a surveillance post and refuge for the populations. Today the Tower houses the tourist office. On the first floor, you will visit the superb ornithological collection which brings together 168 naturalized birds. On the second floor terrace you will have a panoramic view of the entire Camargue, the St Louis canal, the mouth of the Rhône and the salt marshes.
Do not miss the Favouillane sheepfold (early 19th century) which is one of the last traditional sheepfolds in the Camargue, it is one of the largest in the region and at the time (50m long and 12m wide) it is still occupied today by a shepherd and his flock.
The weekly market is held every Wednesday and Saturday morning in downtown Port Saint Louis. An opportunity to stock up on seafood and Provencal produce.
