Discover Montfort sur Argens, a small Var village near Brignoles

Montfort is a small village in the center of the department in the Var hinterland, halfway between the seaside beaches and the Verdon gorges. The village peacefully overlooks the beautiful plain of the Argens river, where olive groves alternate with vineyards against a backdrop of vast forest massifs.

A Templar castle

The first thing you notice when you arrive in Montfort is the imposing castle that dominates the village in the background at the top of the hill. Montfort is fortunate to have the Var's only Templar castle on its territory. This former 13th-century Templar commandery first belonged to the Knights Templar, then to the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem, and later to the Order of Malta. Destroyed at the end of the 16th century, rebuilt and transformed in the 18th, the château is now privately owned, and has a proud appearance with its stone facades, two square towers, mullioned windows and four rows of genoese on the roof. Unfortunately, it cannot be visited.
