Discover the village of Correns in the Var department
Located at the entrance of the Gorges de Bagaredes and the Vallon Sourn, Correns is a pretty village built on the right bank of the Argens river in the center of the Var. The village is peacefully settled in the Provencal countryside, away from major highways, in the middle of beautiful nature.
A village with an organic label
Correns is surrounded by fragrant hills, vineyards, aromatic plants and organic farmland. A precursor to organic before the others, Correns is the first village to be fully certified organic. A revolution that began in 1997, in the midst of a wine crisis, when the mayor, Michael Latz, winegrower and agricultural engineer, proposed to all farmers to switch to organic at the same time.
Correns wines
Correns is renowned for the quality of its produce, including its Côtes de Provence white wine, which is unusual in a region traditionally devoted to rosé. The village is proud to have the only cellar in the whole of Provence reserved exclusively for white wines. In short, organic produce is the hallmark of Correns. Everything here is organic, from the canteen to the renovation of buildings using ecological organic materials. In August, a major festival brings together all the farmers, breeders and producers for an organic and natural fair with almost 130 exhibitors (3rd WE).
The old village of Correns
As you walk through the small narrow streets that turn in the village, you will discover beautiful stone houses carefully renovated. You will reach the old village by the Saint Germain gate from the 14th century in portcullis, you will pass through cobblestone streets, cross small fountains sprinkled by the Argens which crosses the village. At the top of the village stands the remains of Fort Gibron, former residence of the Abbey of Montmajour d'Arles.
Walks and canoeing along the River Argens in the Vallon Sourn
Correns is fortunate to have one of the most beautiful natural sites in central Var with the Vallon Sourn located between Correns and Chateauvert. The banks of the Argens river meander for 4 km in this protected green valley and offer small shaded beaches ideal for family swimming or refreshing canoe trips.
Brad Pitt and the Château Miraval estate
Last but not least, Correns is also known as the village where former American actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt settled. They bought the Miraval estate in 2008 and married there in 2014, giving the village exceptional media coverage. Since then, the couple have divorced and Angelina Jolie has sold her shares in Château Miraval in 2021 to a Russian billionaire, a sale that is being challenged in court by Brad Pitt, who wishes to retain ownership of this beautiful Provencal estate. The legal battle is still ongoing.
What to see and do near Correns?
After visiting the pretty old centre of the village of Correns and its Notre-Dame church, set off to discover the surrounding vineyards. We recommend a guided tour of Château La Calisse, very close to Correns, which is very well organised and produces very good organic wines.
Enjoyable wine tasting and cellar tours! A delicate white wine, a lovely pale rosé and a refined, fruity red. We loved their Discovery Tour, which was very well done and very informative. Tours are in French or English (your choice).
Another idea: go canoeing and kayaking in the Vallon Sourn, a place we find marvellous, an island of coolness in summer.
