Le village de Roussillon dans le Luberon.

Ranked among the most beautiful villages in France, this colorful village owes everything to ochre: this natural pigment that tints every facade, every wall, and every alleyway with a palette of colors ranging from pale yellow to the deepest red. The Ochre Trail, the eco-museum housed in a former factory, and the Conservatory of Ochres and Applied Pigments—the mining of ochre has shaped a unique heritage here, and a landscape you won’t find anywhere else in France.

Your questions about the ochre village of Roussillon

You have sent us several questions about Roussillon. Here are our answers to your most frequently asked questions.

What activities are there to do in Roussillon?

The Ochre Trail is the main attraction of the village of Roussillon. This site, part of the Luberon Regional Nature Park, offers two trails lasting 30 and 50 minutes through former open-air quarries. The colors are striking: red cliffs, ochre sand, and rock formations unique in France. The colorful village is best explored on foot. You can climb to the top, stroll past the facades, and stop by the art galleries. The Tapiézo Contemporary Art Gallery features contemporary works in a distinctive Provençal setting. The Thursday morning market brings the square to life for those wishing to discover local products from the Pays d’Apt region. Hiking trails connect Roussillon to neighboring villages in the Luberon: Gordes, Bonnieux, and Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt.

Where to stay in Roussillon?

There are few hotels in Roussillon, but they are well-located. The Garrigon Boutique Hotel Spa offers a high-end setting with a swimming pool. La Maison des Ocres Provence is a more intimate option, just a stone’s throw from the Ochre Trail. Bed-and-breakfasts and furnished rentals are the main types of accommodation in the Apt-Luberon region. Farmhouses with pools, cottages in the garrigue, villas with views—there’s something for every budget and group size. A campground is also available for nature lovers and tent campers.

What are the tourist attractions in Roussillon?

The Ochre Trail and the Ochre Ecomuseum are the two must-see attractions. The Ecomuseum—a conservatory of ochre and applied pigments—is housed in a former factory. It traces the history of ochre mining and its use as a natural pigment. The architectural heritage rounds out the visit: Saint-Michel Church perched on a cliff, the clock tower, and an orientation table offering panoramic views of Mont Ventoux. The Tapiézo Contemporary Art Gallery adds a contemporary cultural dimension to this welcoming village, ranked among the most beautiful villages in France.

How to get to Roussillon?

By car from Avignon, it’s about 50 km via the D900 toward Apt. Signs for the Vaucluse department are clearly marked. Several parking lots are available for visitors at the village entrance—it’s best to arrive early during peak season. By bus, line 917 connects Apt to Gordes via Roussillon. But without a car, exploring the Luberon remains difficult. The ideal itinerary: Gordes in the morning, Roussillon in the afternoon.

What is the history of Roussillon?

This French commune in Vaucluse has no connection to the province of Roussillon or the Roussillon region in the Pyrénées-Orientales. In 1780, Jean Etienne Astier, a resident of the village, discovered that after processing, ochre becomes a non-fading and non-toxic dye. This discovery sparked industrial production throughout the Apt region. In the 19th century, the quarries employed hundreds of workers. With the rise of synthetic dyes, mining declined. Tourism took over, and the town is now listed among the most beautiful villages in France.

What are the culinary specialties in Roussillon?

La Table des Ocres is the village’s top restaurant: seasonal cuisine, local products, and a view of the ochre cliffs. L'Escalier offers a family-friendly atmosphere. La Treille and La Grappe de Raisin round out the options for dining on a terrace without breaking the bank. The cuisine of the Apt-Luberon region is based on truffles, olive oil, cheeses, and the surrounding vineyards. For a more gourmet experience, several Michelin-starred restaurants are located less than 15 minutes from the village.

What events are happening in Roussillon?

The Provençal market on Thursday mornings is the village’s weekly gathering. During the season, the eco-museum offers creative workshops on pigments and natural paints—perfect for families. Galleries host temporary exhibitions throughout the summer. For the full schedule of events and festivals, the Pays d’Apt-Luberon Tourist Office remains the best source. Place de la Mairie in Roussillon.

Why visit Roussillon?

Roussillon is unique in France. No other colorful village combines natural scenery, ochre heritage, and authentic Provençal atmosphere quite like this one. There are many “Beautiful Villages of France” in the Luberon—but here, color is part of everything: the walls, the paths, the light. It’s also an ideal base for exploring the region: Gordes, L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Avignon, the Provençal Colorado of Rustrel, and the vineyards. A week isn’t enough.
