Looking for the perfect base to explore the Verdon Gorges without breaking the bank or waiting in line? Vinon-sur-Verdon is strategically located at the confluence of the Durance and Verdon rivers, at the crossroads of four departments: Var, Bouches-du-Rhône, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, and Vaucluse.
This town in the Var department is not a cookie-cutter postcard destination designed for mass tourism. It is an authentic Provençal village, with a vibrant local life, that we love very much!
On the left bank of the Verdon River, the old town features beautiful 17th- and 18th-century houses and a courtyard shaded by plane trees said to have been planted by shepherds from Arles in the 18th century—Vinon was then an essential stop on the transhumance route.
Vinon is home to France’s first gliding center, featuring a three-runway airfield at an altitude of 274 meters. The Verdon Regional Nature Park, the lakes, the mountain biking center, kayaking, and canoeing: outdoor activities abound in a preserved natural environment. And just a few kilometers away, Gréoux-les-Bains and its thermal baths, Manosque, and the gorges themselves complete the picture.
This charming little town will captivate you with its Provençal charm: take a stroll through the narrow streets of its old quarters, where you’ll discover some beautiful 17th- and 18th-century houses (Rue des Marseillaises, Rue des Fours...), then take a break on the plane-tree-shaded square to enjoy the cool breeze in the height of summer. Today, the town also welcomes travelers for other reasons.
In Vinon, outdoor activities set the tone. The GR 4 and GR 99 trails start right from the village for day hikes or multi-day treks in the heart of the Verdon’s wilderness. The “Drailles et Bancaus du Verdon” mountain biking area, certified by the French Cycling Federation, offers 250 km of marked trails for all skill levels in the towns of Vinon, Ginasservis, and Saint-Julien-le-Montagnier.
On the water, the options are just as plentiful. The canoe-kayak course, accessible from the bridge over the Verdon, stretches for 600 meters. Rafting, canoeing, kayaking, canyoning, and via ferrata are supervised by professionals from spring through fall.
In the air, Vinon stands out for a rare attraction. The town is home to France’s first gliding center, featuring a three-runway airfield at an elevation of 274 meters. Introductory flights are offered throughout the season—a unique adventure to discover the Verdon Gorges from the sky.
The village itself is worth a stroll. On Sunday mornings, the market on the lively plane-tree-lined square offers a true taste of local life. The Moulin de Saint-André, restored on the banks of the Verdon, hosts concerts, theater, and film screenings—the perfect way to end a busy day in the great outdoors.
