On the itinerary of the
Route de la Lavande, near
Sault and the
Parc Naturel Regional du Luberon, Saint Christol is situated in the middle of breath-taking countryside, at the centre of the Albion district; not far from
Apt,
Forcalquier and
Carpentras.
Saint Christol is a caver's delight and amateurs will appreciate the numerous caves both here and on the "plateau d'Albion". All the caves have their own story which the local people will be only too happy to explain... from discoveries to collapses... there's no lack of stories !
This underground world, which remains largely secret to most of the population, possesses some famous caves including the "aven de La Cervi", "l'aven Autran" and the "Trou Souffleur". Those who prefer open-air activities can enjoy some magnificent walks on Mont Ventoux.
Around
Sault and Saint Christol vast fields of lavender stretch out as far as the eye can see, alternating with golden fields of cereal, the countryside is typical of the
Haute Provence and so beautiful you will never want to leave.
In the village you can visit the magnificent, classified Roman church that was built in 1119 by the Benedictines of "Saint Andrede Villeneuve les Avignon".
You will be surprised by the decor which has a remarkable animal theme - the columns are decorated with serpents, lions and other fabulous beasts... everything is impregnated with a divine mystery... it deserves a detour !
