Discover the magnificent Château d’Entrecasteaux

The Château d’Entrecasteaux stands in the heart of the village of Entrecasteaux, in the Var department, in the heart of Provence Verte.

Château d'Entrecasteaux.

This former 11th-century fortress was renovated during the 15th, 16th, and 18th centuries. Today, it is one of the few historic monuments in the region where the owner himself gives you a tour of the grounds. Every day at 4 p.m., the lord of the castle, Alain Gayral, leads the tour.

Are you planning a trip to Provence and looking for a unique destination, away from the major tourist routes of the French Riviera? The Château d’Entrecasteaux checks all the boxes. Built on a rocky promontory, the château combines the charm of a country house with the imposing appearance of an ancient fortress, simply adorned with wrought-iron balustrades.

The site embodies a military heritage, a home of the Provençal high nobility—linked to Madame de Sévigné and the de Grignan family—and a testament to 18th-century scientific exploration with Admiral Bruny d’Entrecasteaux’s expedition in search of La Pérouse in the South Pacific. In short, the history of this place extends far beyond the borders of the Var.

The History of Château d'Entrecasteaux

Château d'Entrecasteaux is an ancient fortress whose origins date back to the 11th century. It was remodeled during the 15th, 16th, and 18th centuries. Most of what we see today dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. The history of the site is inextricably linked to several prominent families and extraordinary figures.

In 1669, the château passed to the de Castellane family, specifically to François Adhémar de Castellane de Monteil, Count of Grignan and son-in-law of Madame de Sévigné. In 1678, Louis XIV elevated the barony of Entrecasteaux to a marquisate. The estate then changed hands and came into the possession of the Bruny family, who would profoundly influence its architecture.

The marquis had French doors added to the château—an innovation for the time—as well as wrought-iron balconies in the Louis XV style. His son Jean-Baptiste Bruny inherited the château, but his fate took a tragic turn: he murdered his wife in 1784 and ended up imprisoned in Portugal. His brother Antoine, however, made history in a different way.

Admiral Bruny d'Entrecasteaux, born at the château in 1737, was sent by Louis XVI to search for La Pérouse in the South Pacific. He left France in 1791 and died of scurvy and dysentery on July 20, 1793. During the Revolution, the castle was nearly demolished. It was the intervention of the village priest that saved it.

In 1974, after several decades of neglect, the castle was restored by the British painter Hugh Ian Macgarvie-Munn, who converted part of it into a museum until his death in 1981. It is thanks to his efforts, as well as those of his family, that the castle was designated a historic monument in 1988. Since 2000, Alain Gayral has been the owner and has continued the restoration with infectious passion.

The famous gardens of the Château d'Entrecasteaux

The garden of the Château d'Entrecasteaux is one of the most beautiful French gardens in the Var department. Every year, it attracts as many visitors as the castle itself. And for good reason: its history is as romantic as that of its former owners.

Jardin du château.

It is said that Le Nôtre gave the Marquise de Sévigné the plans and sketches of the Orangery Garden at Versailles so that her son-in-law could reproduce them at Entrecasteaux. The garden is thus directly inspired by the designs of Le Nôtre, Louis XIV’s landscape architect. Here, we find ourselves before a reflection of Versailles, nestled in the Provence Verte, far from the hustle and bustle of tourism.

The garden and its boxwood maze are open to the public. The south facade of the château overlooks this meticulously designed space. The proportions, lines, and volumes create a visual harmony rarely found in the region. It is a contemplative stroll that you won’t find anywhere else in the Var.

To the north, the castle opens onto a vast terrace built over the vaulted cellars, at the foot of which a recently restored ice house evokes the lifestyle of that era. It was supplied with water frozen on the meadows bordering the Bresque River. Even without entering the castle, the garden and its surroundings are well worth the trip. Allow a good hour to enjoy them at a leisurely pace.
