Where can you swim at Lake Esparron?

The turquoise waters of Lake Esparron really make you want to take a dip. And the good news is: there are several swimming spots around the lake, suitable for everyone.

The most popular beach is undoubtedly Saint-Julien, on the Var side. There’s only one access road from Gréoux-les-Bains; at the end of it, you’ll leave your car in the parking lot and walk to the beach. Expect about a quarter-hour walk along the old Verdon Canal. The trail is pleasant and shaded, and the beach is definitely worth the trip.

Saint-Julien Beach stretches about 350 meters in length and 20 meters in width, covering some 7,000 m² of sand and pebbles. On-site parking is limited to 120 vehicles and requires a fee in July and August. Leave early to avoid disappointment at the gate.

On the Esparron-de-Verdon side, the village beach is more accessible. In summer, swimming is supervised there, making it a safe environment for families. It’s also the busiest: expect crowds in the middle of August.

For those seeking tranquility, the lake’s shores hide secluded coves accessible via trails. The Garde-Canal Trail runs along the old Verdon Canal and leads to small beaches tucked away among the rocky inlets, offering breathtaking views of the lake. A real reward for those willing to walk a bit.

Lake Esparron is one of the last lakes along the Verdon River before it joins the Durance. In summer, this is also the section where the water is warmest—a significant advantage for comfortable swimming starting in the spring.

Activities at Lake Esparron

Lake Esparron isn’t just a place to relax. It’s a true playground for outdoor enthusiasts.

You can go sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, or canoeing and kayaking, or even rent an electric boat to explore the hidden coves. The two water sports centers on the lake’s shore offer all these rental options. Be sure to book in advance during peak season: wait times can sometimes exceed an hour, and the electric boats—which are in limited supply—often book up very quickly on weekends and in July and August.

Canoeing remains the favorite activity among water enthusiasts. From Esparron-de-Verdon, you can paddle up the Lower Verdon Gorges for nearly 10 kilometers. It’s one of the most enjoyable ways to explore the Verdon from the water.

For those who prefer to keep their feet on dry land, the trails around the lake offer beautiful walks. The Botanical Trail winds through wooded hillsides, while other routes skirt the lake, offering breathtaking panoramic views.

Fishing also has its enthusiasts at Lake Esparron. The lake is classified as a second-category fishing lake, home to species such as carp, pike, trout, and perch. It’s a popular spot among anglers from across the region.

Features of Lake Esparron

Before you go, here are some useful facts to help you better understand this exceptional natural site. Lake Esparron de Verdon covers 328 hectares. It is an artificial reservoir created in 1967 by EDF following the construction of the Gréoux-les-Bains Dam. It supplies water to 116 municipalities, including Toulon, Aix-en-Provence, and Marseille.

Lake Esparron is the last of the five reservoirs built on the Verdon River since 1963. It ranks third in size, after Lake Sainte-Croix and Lake Castillon. Its maximum depth reaches 55 meters directly below the dam.

Its waters boast the characteristic turquoise color for which the Verdon is renowned. This is no coincidence: the waters are protected from pollution by a ban on motorboats and a ban on construction along the shores. The landscape therefore remains wild and unspoiled, which has become rare in Provence.

Lake Esparron is part of the Verdon Regional Nature Park. It is essential to respect local rules: wild camping and open fires are prohibited. A natural setting that must be earned and respected.

How do you get to Lake Esparron?

Lake Esparron takes a bit of effort to reach. It isn’t always easy to access, but that’s precisely part of its charm.

There are two main access points: near the Esparron-de-Verdon marina, and Saint-Julien Beach, which is ideal for swimming. Parking is available nearby, but plan to arrive early to find a spot during peak season. Here’s a map to help you locate the access roads:

To reach Saint-Julien Beach from Gréoux-les-Bains, follow the signposted road. Access is via the Chemin d’Aurafrède, near the Gréoux-les-Bains bridge—9.5 km from the center of Saint-Julien-le-Montagnier—followed by 7 km of dirt road. A standard car is sufficient, but avoid motorhomes that are too wide: vehicles exceeding 2.20 meters in height or 5.50 meters in length are not permitted on this road.

During the summer, a bus line runs to the lake from Manosque and Gréoux-les-Bains. This is a convenient option to avoid the parking headache in the middle of August.

The town of Esparron-de-Verdon is located about 13 kilometers from Gréoux-les-Bains and 26 kilometers from Manosque. The road connecting Gréoux to Esparron overlooks the lake and offers several beautiful viewpoints: slow down—it’s worth taking a look.

What’s the best campground near the lake?

Spending the night near Lake Esparron is the perfect way to enjoy the site first thing in the morning before the crowds arrive. Several campgrounds are located nearby.

In Esparron-de-Verdon itself, Camping Le Lavandin is a well-known spot among regulars. It offers bungalows, mobile homes, and wooden chalets for rent—ideal for vacations with family or friends—near Lake Esparron. The village is just a few minutes’ walk away.

On-site, a water park with a heated outdoor pool, a wading pool, and a water slide rounds out the amenities. Ideal for family vacations.

Places to visit around the lake

Lake Esparron is more than just a body of water. It’s part of a rich region where nature and heritage come together at every turn.

Start with the village of Esparron-de-Verdon itself. Perched on a cliff, it offers a magnificent view of the lake and its turquoise waters. The Château d’Esparron is listed as a Historic Monument: its 13th-century square keep was built by the Castellane family.

Just a few kilometers away, Gréoux-les-Bains is well worth a stop. A typical Provençal village that comes alive during the summer season, it is France’s third-largest spa town. Its 12th-century Templar castle and its cave baths dating back to antiquity make it an unmissable cultural destination.

For lovers of unspoiled nature, Île du Barbu is a place like no other. This small peninsula facing the village of Esparron-de-Verdon is accessible only by boat. It features wild beaches, lush green meadows, and small, peaceful coves shaded by ancient oak trees.

The Lower Verdon Gorges complete the picture. Accessible by canoe from Esparron, they connect the lake to Quinson through several kilometers of spectacular canyon. A “Tour du Lac” trail (GR de Pays) and an eco-museum showcasing life in days gone by are also among the area’s points of interest.

What’s the best time of year to visit the lake?

The good news is that Lake Esparron can be visited almost year-round. But depending on what you’re looking for, certain times of year are clearly better suited than others.

Summer remains the best season for water sports and swimming. The water temperature reaches 22 to 24°C in summer, making it an ideal spot for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or simply a peaceful swim in the turquoise waters. On the downside, the lake attracts large crowds in July and August: packed parking lots, long lines at the water sports centers, and relative calm during the day.

Spring is perhaps the best season to enjoy the area without the tourist crowds. The water warms up quickly in spring and reaches ideal temperatures for swimming as early as May. The hiking trails are accessible, and nature is at its best. Accommodations are more readily available, and prices are more reasonable.

Fall also offers beautiful conditions for hikers and nature lovers. The Provençal light at this time of year is magnificent on the lake. Water sports remain possible through September and October.

Winter is quieter, even deserted in some places. Some campgrounds and water sports centers close for the season. But for a walk along the lake in total silence, it’s a unique experience. The area remains accessible, and the view from the village of Esparron is spectacular no matter the season.
