Presentation of the Var département

Located in south-eastern France, the Var is a département in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It is identified by the number 83. Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, it shares borders with Alpes-Maritimes, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Vaucluse and Bouches-du-Rhône.

The department is organised into three arrondissements: Brignoles, Draguignan and Toulon, the latter being the capital of the Var. It also has 23 cantons and 153 communes.

The Var is particularly well known for its natural wealth and varied landscapes. These include the Maures and Estérel massifs, and a host of islands such as Porquerolles. It is also appreciated for its Mediterranean climate and long sandy beaches.

The name Var is associated with a coastal river that has not been in the department since 1860, but rather in the Alpes-Maritimes.
