Your questions about things to do in June.

After we published this guide, we received several questions from you about things to do in Provence and on the French Riviera in June. Here are our answers to your most frequently asked questions.

What are the best family activities in June?

June is a great time to explore Provence with the family, before the crowds and heat of July. The calanques near Marseille and Cassis are easy to hike in the morning. The Village des Tortues in Carnoules, in the Var, is an original educational outing. The Palais des Papes in Avignon offers an augmented reality tour designed for children, and the Pont du Gard is worth a half-day trip with a picnic on site. Water parks open in June — Wave Island in Monteux being the top pick. Evening markets in the villages of the Luberon and the Alpilles are a free, authentic alternative to round off a family day.

What festivals and celebrations take place in Provence in June?

Three events stand out this month. The Fêtes d'Arles immerse the entire city in Camargue traditions: the Fête du Costume, the Pégoulade procession, bullfights — a celebration the people of Arles live from the inside. The Chorégies d'Orange open as early as June 1st at the ancient Roman theatre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a one-of-a-kind setting for an open-air opera under the stars. The Nuit du Petit Saint-Jean in Valréas brings together 400 performers in medieval costume every June 23rd for a procession held without interruption since 1504. On June 21st, the Fête de la Musique fills the squares of Aix, Marseille, Avignon and dozens of villages across the region with free live music until late into the night.
