Tourrettes-sur-Loup is a charming town in the Alpes-Maritimes department, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Mediterranean, 25 km from Nice and a stone's throw from Vence.
This medieval village has everything you could want when exploring the heart of Provence: unspoiled heritage, authentic crafts, and breathtaking views.
Tourrettes-sur-Loup is also the only place in France where violets are grown as a main crop — a distinctive feature that has earned it the title of “City of Violets” and always surprises visitors.
Between the Gorges du Loup, artisan workshops, the violet festival, and Provençal cuisine, there is plenty to do for a day — or even a whole vacation. The rest of this article gives you all the details you need to plan your visit.
It is called “City of Violets” because this pretty and shy little flower has been grown there for almost a century. It is still one of the village's main activities today. A festival is organized in its honor in March with flower parades and flower battles.
Tourrettes sur Loup is best discovered by strolling slowly and quietly through its pretty little streets, vaulted passageways, tastefully restored old stone facades, and flower-lined stairways.
In the Grand' Rue, in the heart of the old village, nearly 30 workshops, art galleries, and artisan studios have gathered, finding here the serenity and quality of life necessary for creativity. You can admire paintings, sculptures, weavings, jewelry, and pottery in the old village center.
Finally, don't leave the village without visiting the 15th-century Château des Villeneuve and its beautiful little square. Today, it houses the town hall and hosts numerous exhibitions throughout the year.
