Discover Vallauris, a town of art in the heart of the French Riviera

The town of Vallauris is located in the magnificent setting of Golfe Juan. The views of the Bay of Cannes, the Lérins Islands, and the Estérel mountains are exceptional.

Belle maison.

Less flashy than its neighbors, it nevertheless hides a treasure that attracts art lovers and curious visitors from all over the world: a centuries-old pottery tradition, brought back into the spotlight in the 20th century by Pablo Picasso. Here, we are not just talking about ceramics, but a true cultural identity. In its narrow streets, the clatter of potter's tools mingles with lively conversations and the smells of damp earth and heated enamel.

A lively and creative Mediterranean setting

Vallauris enjoys the mild climate of the French Riviera: bright winters, flower-filled springs, and sunny summers cooled by the sea breeze. The surrounding hills protect the town and provide a green setting, ideal for walking or cycling.

History tells us that pottery arrived here as early as Roman times, but it was in the Middle Ages that the town became a major center for the manufacture of terracotta kitchenware. After the war, the tradition declined... until 1948, when Picasso moved there and transformed utilitarian pottery into an art form in its own right. In just a few years, he produced more than 4,000 pieces, collaborated with local artisans, and attracted a new generation of ceramists.

Stroll through Vallauris

The tour often begins at the market square, where every Friday morning from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., local producers set up their stalls: fragrant olives, goat cheese, bouquets of lavender, and sometimes a few unique pieces of pottery.

Walking down Rue Clément Bel, you'll come across shop windows filled with brightly colored bowls, plates, and vases. Further on, the Musée National Picasso – La Guerre et la Paix (Picasso National Museum – War and Peace), housed in the castle's former chapel, is home to the monumental fresco painted by Picasso in 1952, a powerful testimony against war.

Vieille ville de Vallauris.

A few steps away, the Magnelli Museum pays tribute to the abstract painter Alberto Magnelli and contemporary ceramics. And to extend your stroll, head to Golfe-Juan, the seaside district of Vallauris, just 2 km away. Its port was the scene of a significant event: Napoleon's landing in 1815, on his return from Elba, before his march to Paris.
