“L’Escalier du Château” (The Castle Staircase)

To admire the most beautiful views of Cabrières d'Aigues and its location at the foot of Mont Mourre-Nègre, take “L’Escalier du Château”, a narrow street, from the central parking lot. This superb stone staircase is decorated with cacti and irises and winds its way up to offer you different views that are worth the detour.

Hike on Mont Mourre Nègre

Three beautiful walks are signposted to enable you to discover the pretty spots surrounding the village, including the superb Mont Mourre-Nègre, the highest point in the Luberon. Take the small street to the left of the restaurant de l'Ormeau and then follow the path to Mourre Nègre. A lovely 4-hour loop takes you to and from the village via the crests of Mourre Nègre.

What is the history of Cabrières d'Aigues?

The village of Cabrières d'Aigues has a rich history dating back several centuries. Its name “Cabrières” derives from the Latin “capraria”, which refers to goat farming, while the suffix “d'Aigues” comes from the Provençal “aigo”, meaning water, due to the numerous springs that irrigate this territory.
In the Middle Ages, Cabrières d'Aigues was a fortified village, of which some remains are still visible today.
The history of the village is also marked by the persecution of the Vaudois in the 16th century. This religious community had settled in the region, and Cabrières d'Aigues was one of the places affected by the violent repressions of 1545.
The parish church, the village's central historic monument, dates mainly from the 17th century and is well worth a visit to discover its architecture, which is characteristic of the region.
