Standing on the edge of the Vaucluse plateau, Gordes is one of the Luberon 's star villages, home to many celebrities and artists.
Its white and gray dry-stone houses spiral around the rock on which the village sits, with the church and castle at the top facing the Luberon hills. Its privileged location, exceptional charm and typical architecture have earned it the title of “one of the most beautiful villages in France”.
As you stroll through the narrow, winding streets between the village's tall houses, you'll come across some superb old doorways, expertly restored vaults and flat stone walls. And as you turn onto a terrace, you'll be treated to a sumptuous panorama of the Luberon valley and mountains.
In the center of the village of Gordes, you can visit its imposing fortress castle, which houses the town hall and the Pol Mara museum, a contemporary Flemish painter from the Luberon region. The curious village of bories is also worth a visit: bories are small, round stone huts formerly used by shepherds and hunters.
You won't want to miss the famous and beautiful Senanque Abbey, confined to its verdant valley. It is still inhabited by Cistercian monks who produce honey, lavender essence and liqueur. The entire 12th-century building is open to visitors.
Without a doubt, Gordes is one of the must-sees of the Luberon Regional Nature Park. The village's worldwide success and reputation have attracted a wealthy clientele on the lookout for second homes... Peter Mayle's best-selling book “A Year in Provence” must also have contributed to this.
Gordes is often considered the most beautiful village in France, thanks to the harmony of the village, the beauty of its buildings, the charm of its narrow streets, the exceptional upkeep of its mas provençaux and a breathtaking panorama! Take a look at our photo slideshow at the bottom of this page to discover all the beauty Gordes has to offer!
