What is the history of Puget-sur-Argens?

The Provençal village of Puget-sur-Argens is first mentioned in 990 under the name Villa Pogito. Its name comes from the Latin podium, the rocky mound on which this ancient fortified settlement was built. Human occupation of the area dates back to prehistoric times, with several Palaeolithic sites identified in the vicinity. A Roman milestone from the reign of Augustus, later repurposed as a baptismal font inside the church, is a tangible reminder of the area's strong Roman heritage, lying just outside the great ancient port of Fréjus. In the 16th century, the Béal canal was dug by Craponne to bring water from the Argens river. The built heritage still includes the Beffroy gate, the Clock Tower (1776) and the Gothic church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur. This rich culture and these enduring traditions make Puget a genuinely historic stop in the Var.
